Blindness and Sight - Sight Versus Insight in Oedipus the...

Sight Versus Insight in Oedipus the King Anyone who has common sense will remember that the bewilderments of the eye are of two kinds, and arise from two causes, either from coming out of the light or from going into the light, which is true of the minds eye, quite as much as the bodily eye; and he who remembers this when he sees anyone whose vision is perplexed and weak, will not be too ready to laugh; he will ask whether that soul of man has come out of the brighter life, and is unable to see because unaccustomed to the dark, or having turned from darkness to the day is dazzled by excess light. And he will count the other one happy in his condition and state of being, and he will pity the other (Plato, The Republic)†¦show more content†¦Believing his knowledge and rationalism to be complete, he proclaims, I,/ Oedipus the ignorant,. . . stopped [the sphinx] -/ by using thought, (401-402). All the while, Oedipus unconsciously represses the lingering shadow of the prophecy, because the heinous transgressions of patricide and incest are incongruent with his conception of his ideal self, and therefore uncomfortable and even frightening. With time and circumstances seeming to obscure the prophecy and confirm Oedipus vision, Oedipus remains ignorant of his ignorance. In the eyes of his people and of himself, he is the paragon of virtue, a wise and noble king. Oedipus incomplete knowledge contributes to his hamartia, breeding hubris and leading him to declare, But I who count myself the child of Chance,/ the giver of good, shall never know dishonor (1085-1086). Although Oedipus hubris [is] directed toward the good of his polis, (Bull, 6) it also gives him the irrational forthrightness that lets him strike out against truth, mistakenly and ironically accusing Tiresias of being the child of endless night, (379) blind in [his] ears, [his] reason, and [his] eyes (376). The accusations of Tiresias motivate Oedipus to seek the truth, and after his intensive interrogation of three witnessesShow MoreRelatedA POSITION PAPER ON SOPHOCLES’ OEDIPUS REX2713 Words   |  11 PagesTHE KING WEARS A SHADES AS THE SUN SHINES BRIGHT WHICH MAKES HIS DAYS DARKER AND DARKER EVERY SINGLE DAY (with some relations to the Philippine Government and setting as a whole) A POSITION PAPER ON SOPHOCLES’ OEDIPUS REX REGULANO, Jean Paula Bermudez 2011-05787 HUM 1 X Oedipus Rex’ knowledge, which served as his gut against the others to be the King of Thebes, is only limited to the information on his people and his environment, excluding the information about himself due to his blindness andRead MoreLiterature: Compare and Contrast - Literary Devices5483 Words   |  22 Pagesliterary works by authors of all ages, writing non-fiction and fictional stories, poetry, and essays. Question: Discuss about theBusiness Communication for Facilitate Business Innovation. Answer: Introduction Business communication is sharing of information between people within and outside the organization. It is performed for the commercial benefit of the organization. It is also known as relaying of information by its people within a particular organization. It is also defined as how a company provides its information about its product and services to customers. Communication can be internal or external(Newman 2015). It is necessary to have effective communication in order to achieve your goals. Effective communication will help to establish good relations between you and your staff which in turn will boost the morale of employees and will foster the growth of business. A communication is considered effective if the information shared between two parties is easily understood by very person(Ellen Lowey 2015). Communication is an important part of business .Its importance can be described with the help of following points. Increased Productivity-: The success of any project depends on successful teamwork. Effective communication between employers and staff led to better understanding and build trust and confidence which help to increases productivity and thereby achieving the goals of the organization(Godemann Michelsen 2011). Help Grow Customer Base-: Business communication help to increase customer base by attracting new customers and retaining the existing ones. Customer is the king of the market and a customer without a doubt is lifeblood of business. Effective communication can help to persuade customers to buy your product(Wimmer Domonick 2010). Facilitate Business Innovation-: Effective communication can help business to grow and increase its market share. If the company is launching a new product and if it is not communicated properly then it would be a total failure. Effective communication can help to increase customer base and audience(Elen 2012). Business Goals-: Effective communication can help to achieve business goals. If there is good communication between staff members themselves and with the employer it will lead to better exchange of ideas and information which will lead to early achievement of goals. Improves Business Partnership-: Business communication helps to improve business partnership(Hargie 2006). If there is communication between supplier and other external parties it can help to understand their needs and do work accordingly. Business communication can lead to good business partnerships and overall growth of business. Contemporary Issues in Professional business Communication Communication is a continuous and never ending process. The success of any organization depends on the quality of the communication. In order to have effective business communication it is necessary to understand the communication problems and concepts clearly. In order to survive in the market it is necessary to have good communication skills and understanding of all issues in business communication. Work place communication is very important in order to build and maintain relationships and it also leads to innovation(Steane Burton 2004). Communication makes the employees confortable in expressing their ideas which help the firm to achieve goals. Lack of communication creates several issues which are as under-: Unclear Roles and Responsibilities-: The first and the foremost problem in business communication is unclear roles and responsibilities(Great Britain: Parliament: House of Commons: Business, Innovation and Skills Committee 2013). If the person is not clear what he is expected to do and to whom he is answerable that it would lead to ineffective communication. If he is not clear about the tasks he is responsible for it will create issues in communication. Undefined Decision Making Authorities and Processes-: Decisions are a big deal in any business. There are some major decisions and some are related to daily business process and operational decisions. Issues related to this concept are authority and processes is not clearly defined for every employee which create problem as everybody wants to be a part of decision making and also want their decision to be accepted. So authority should be clearly defined. Lack of Standards-:Communication problems in the workplace can lower standards. We should establish a communication policy to standardize the methods used for communicating with both colleagues and customers. We should not rely on one type of communication. For example, using only verbal communication makes tracking conversations and information difficult Communication Barriers-: Sometimes the sender himself is confused about the message he wants to convey which create problems. Sometimes he is clear about the message but he cannot convey in proper manner which lead to communication problems and sometimes the receiver it not able to understand it correctly or misinterpret it which create issues. Misinterpretations and Assumptions-: Communication can lead to interpretation and sometimes it is interpreted incorrectly. People often make assumptions based on the information they hear or read whether or not they hear or read it correctly. Nonverbal cues also lead people to make assumptions that can impede communication. For example, an employee who avoids eye contact may cause others to assume she is hiding something when she may simply feel inferior or shy. Mixing Work and Personal Communication-: Some employees mix their personal lives with workplace environment which crate barriers in communication. Personal communication distract them rom work which lead to mistakes in communication. Opportunities and Challenges Created by Issues in Professional Business Communication The ability of the business to communicate is crucial to its success. Reaching out to customers and communication with staff is important to achieve business goals. However there are certain challenges and opportunities related to this which is as follows-: Technology-: Now technology can be used in order to communicate with staff and customers. The ideas behind using technology are it saves time, money and energy(Trotter Guang 2012). Email, fax, voice mail and Intranet messaging can be quite effective for the quick transfer of factual, direct information. However, the reliance upon this technology to communicate emotion is not possible in the workplace. Tone, posture, facial expression and eye contact cannot be expressed effectively using technology. But with the help of technology issue of wrong and incomplete can be resolved(McQuerry 2018) Diversity-: Every person has unique frame of reference and they see the world differently according to it(Annoynomous. 2018). Difference in age, gender and religion create different point of view which brings many solutions to the problem which sometimes create issues in communication. So in order to solve this proper framework should be established. Untrained Work Force-: Work force plays very important role in business as most of the work is done by them at ground level. Illiteracy or language barrier can crate issues and also lack of computer knowledge and mobile devise create problems in business. Challenge before business is to train the workforce(Conrad 2014). Distance-:Businesses must find ways to communicate with people who are away from the office, such as a remote sales force or people who work from home. Some companies deliver information to mobile devices or schedule regular meetings so employees can anticipate and schedule their trips and sales calls around them. The challenges are even greater for companies that do business globally(Rasmus 2016). Its a challenge before a company to transfer information to people at distant places. Budget-: Budget is also a challenge before a company. Companies with low budget may not be able to compete with companies using high tech communication methods to communicate with customers, suppliers and public. They need to find out the economical ways to communicate their message to audience like face to face communication, bulletin boards, telephone conversation and printed newsletters. Too much or Too Less communication-: Sometimes the information provided is too less to takedecisions and sometimes it is so lengthy that people ignore it or loses interest. So its a challengebefore a business to frame the message in correct form to maintain interest. McDonalds For the purpose of this assignment I have chosen McDonalds as core business. Its a fast food chain and its thriving in Australia. As it is operating globally there must be many issues related to business communication. It employs almost 90,000 people across the restaurants and management offices. As it is a big chain there are many issues related to business communicated which are confronted by them. Issues faced by McDonalds -: There are many issues which are faced by McDonalds related to business communication which is described below-: Food Image-: The first and the foremost issue in food chain business is food image. Food image of McDonalds is deteriorating because it is assumed that they are not using good ingredients in preparing various food items. Thus the major issue is bad food image. Slow and Inaccurate Service-: Another issue faced by McDonalds is slow and inaccurate service. They have introduced too many items so quickly that t creates confusion and led to inaccurate orders and slow service. Customer Service-: Customer is he king of the market. Satisfied customer serves as an advertising agent. McDonalds drive through wait time has increased a lot due to increase in menu which creates a lot of problem for the customers. Lack of Flexibility-: Consistency s one of the attractions of McDonalds as people know if they order something what they are going to get. This has become an issue as people want change .They want to tailor their orders themselves .For this McDonalds is also adding certain sauces and toppings in their kitchen. Price Sensitivity-: Another issue is price sensitivity. People are price sensitive means if they will get the same thing with same ingredients at cheaper price they will go for that quitting our product. Likewise if the price of the product is increased slightly then also hey will shift their demand. Increased Competition-: Increased competition is also a major issue in any business. Man new joints are entering the market which increases the competition and may lead to fall in market share. Marketing-: Marketing is one another issue. It is considered that McDonalds provide unhealthy junk food. This image is created by a food factory scandal. In order to re-establish that connection again with the customers many audits are going on. Creative messages with emphasis on quality of food are being addressed to people to gain back market share. Offering Best value-: Another big problem is offering the best value at best price. This is the major challenge in which you have to offer best taste and quality at reasonable price that is less than the competitor. So to deal with this issue market research should be done and production should be done according to customer taste. Burden on Employees-: With the increase in menu list there is increase in the burden that falls on employees. Franchisers are also angry with the overloaded menu as they have to deal with it. It adds to cost as it requires extra ingredients and equipment. On the basis of these points it can be said that there are lot of challenges and issues which are faced by business. But they have to overcome these issues ad make their business a profitable concern along with keeping quality standards in mind. Solution to the issues is as under-: Upgrade Quality-: In order to solve the quality issue there is a need to upgrade the quality of the product by using good raw material and fresh vegetables and toppings. Reasonable Price-: To meet competition and to increase market share reasonable price should be charged with reasonable profit margin a maintaining quality. Good Customer Services-: Customer services should be improved by reducing the waiting time and by providing clean ambience. Customers should be satisfied with the quality and orders should be placed quickly. Variety-: To overcome the problem of flexibility there should be the variety of food offered to people with different sauces and toppings. Accurate Service-: Accurate services should be given that means what is ordered should be given without confusing it with other customers order or with other ingredients Conclusion Thus it can be said there are variety of issues confronted by every business. Success lies in the fact that we have to overcome these issues and make our business survive in a competitive world and achieve our goals keeping business standards in mind. Answer to the cloning question essays

Answer to the cloning question essays In our society today there are many topics that are very controversial and stir up heated arguments. When you think of these issues, things like abortion and the death penalty come to mind. The leaps and bounds made in the advancement of technology that must be discussed and decided upon, this will definitely add to the number of controversies. One major topic that has arisen lately is that of human cloning. The definition of cloning is the production of one or more individual plants or animals (whole or in part) that are genetically identical to an original plant or animal (Robinson Religious Tolerance). Genetic researchers tell us that now it is only a matter of time before this is possible. Ten years ago we would have thought that this was so far fetched that scientists could only dream of ever accomplishing this feat. Now it is almost a reality. The topic of cloning is a very touchy one because it deals with several other issues, including abortion. Because of this, the majority of Americans, and the rest of the world, do not see human cloning as a good thing. To understand the topic, you must first know exactly how something is cloned from another cell. The best example to show would be the one that made the now famous cloned sheep named Dolly. First, a cell is taken from a donor, or the person who is to be cloned. Then an unfertilized egg is removed from another donor female. Then the DNA is removed from the donor cell and placed into the donor egg. The egg is then placed back into the surrogate mother where it grows naturally (Robinson Religious Tolerance). When the child is born, it will be a genetic match to the person or animal who donated the original cell or DNA. True human cloning would require taking a somatic cell, as opposed to a reproductive cell such as an egg or sperm cell, from a person and removing its nu cleus. The DNA of the somatic cell is transferred to an enucleated egg cell. But this is not c...

Financial Business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Financial Business - Essay Example This type of financing is known as Debt financing. Businesses also raise funds by offering their stocks or shares to different financial institutions including banks and insurance firms, governments and general public at a defined ‘Par or Stated’ value with or without a premium depending upon the market prices. A firm can issue a maximum number of shares that are known as Authorized shares and can’t exceed that limit. Shares issued are known as Outstanding shares. Dividends are paid to shareholders who have owned the shares. Short term loans can be either ‘secured’ that means that specific assets such as inventory are pledged as collateral or they can be unsecured that means the firm has not promised any assets as collateral. These loans are usually acquired from different financial institutions such as commercial banks, insurance companies or from financial groups such as private investors, individuals with savings and small/medium banking institutions at relatively higher interest rate to meet their current needs of finance. A commercial paper is an unsecured debt (in other words a ‘promissory note’) taken by businesses to finance the inventory purchases and various short-term liabilities such as wages, rent, fuel etc. Undoubtedly, they mature in less than 9 months or 270 days and have a lower interest rate than what a bank normally charges from its clients. Only the large businesses with extensive financial resources, strength and power are able to sell commercial papers compared to small and medium scale enterprises, which do not enjoy extensive capital resources. Sales of stocks and bonds are a major source of finance for public limited companies, multinationals and large scale corporations. The sale of shares results in cash inflows for the issuing firm and the buyer receives an ownership in that firm. Whereas, the sale of bonds receives an interest payment (calculated through the interest rate) along with the

Importance of supervision in the workplace Research Paper

Importance of supervision in the workplace - Research Paper Example This small restaurant is among the favorite restaurants frequented by students from Fordham University. The menu comprises of snacks, entrees and drinks. This restaurant is unique as a buffet is located near the entrance whereby workers are line up with the main objective of providing quality service to the restaurant’s daily customers. A burrito bar is adjacent to the buffet. This burrito bar has all the items needed to make a burrito or a sandwich. The room adjacent the burrito bar towards the interior holds a machine packed with fountain beverages .This room also contains the soup and salad bar. The restaurant also contains a dining room with a table put near the register that acts as a resting place for the workers during breaks. The dining room holds three television sets with one connected near this table. It is also important to assert that the observations were performed in this area. Observation My observation for this report took four days to complete. The first thre e days of the observation were done with the absence of the head supervisor, Kimberly. Observation on the fourth day was done in the presence of Kimberly. This is attributed to the fact that Kimberly was on vacation on the first three days of the observation. Kimberly is an African American female aged twenty nine. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Food Science, Nutrition, and Dietetics. The observation included taking notes on the different jobs as well as the special tasks that the employees were expected to carry out. The observation elucidated many jobs including cooks (four), entree servers (two), floor cleaners, pizza servers (one), salad bar runner (one), burrito makers and servers (two), cashier (one), dish washers (four), food runner (one), and student managers (eight). The work of the food runner involved transporting food from downstairs to upstairs. Gender roles As may be expected the jobs are distributed differently among the sexes. Serving and distributing food i s for the females. For instance, only females serve entree and burritos. Their job involves cutting food in distinct ways that are catching to the eyes due to their improved appearance. Mary and Jane, both from African origins were the experts in serving entree and burritos. Mary is twenty seven years old and a Kenyan while Jane is a twenty nine lady from Ghana. Both Mary and Jane have finished three years courses in catering and have both worked in this restaurant for one year. It is therefore hard to find a man serving and distributing food. On the other hand, males are involved in jobs necessitating lifting. For instance beverage worker are males are they are capable of lifting bags of syrup that are used in fountain beverage machines. Other roles associated with men include food runners since the task calls for heavy lifting at times. The floor jobs are also usually for men as they involve a lot of sweeping, moping, and lifting heavy garbage bags. One of the most respected clean er was George, a Mexican. George is forty years old, married, and a father of three. He is heralded as being one of the most behaved workers in the restaurant and has worked there for eight years. Therefore, gender roles seem to play an important aspect in deciding the duties of each and every employee. As asserted by Jeffrey and Streicher, â€Å"

Advertising Journey Of Mcdonalds Marketing Essay

Advertising Journey Of Mcdonalds Marketing Essay It is not too much to say that McDonalds is one of the largest corporations that can even represent the United States of America. It still secures its dominant position that outruns Burgerking overwhelmingly in fast food industry. In 1940, Dick and Mac Mcdonald founded a restaurant called McDonalds Bar-B-Q in California. It was common drive-in restaurant. By 1948, the brothers decided to improve their restaurant to make differentiation from other similar businesses. They have introduced Speedee-Service-System, which is more like automobile assembly system, to make their food faster and cheaper. It was revolutionary shift which led the restaurant more famous. One day, a guy called Ray Kroc visited the Mcdonald brothers and the Kroc was fascinated by the fast food systemic restaurant. In 1954, the Kroc was determined to take over franchising for McDonalds. By 1955, he opened his first franchised McDonalds in Illinois. Since then till now, there are more than 34,000 franchised McDonalds restaurants are running over 119 countries. Advertising campaign of McDonalds is based on their brand identity. McDonalds is not just fast food restaurant where people order the food and have it but the place where people enjoy the time with their friends or families. For the last 50 years, 23 different slogans were presented in the United States of America. There were a few more slogans created in other countries and regions. Regardless of various different slogans and media, Mcdonalds have been maintaining their corporate philosophy in their advertising which is Be the fun, friendly, place for families. C:Documents and SettingsDanbiDesktopw334.jpg In early stage of the brand, the advertising was mainly focused on print advertising. In the 1960s, TV advertising was the most effective media in advertising industry. However, in 1974, there was ground breaking advertising emerged which could be considered as an integrated advertising. That campaign was designed to promote the product called BigMac. At that time, the slogan was Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun. In TV commercial, the slogan was used as a jingle that could be sung by people, namely, the jingle was a big idea in the campaign. The jingle was appeared on not only TV commercial but also in newspapers, on T-shirts and the radio. Since it has been created sensation, there was rewarding event for customers. The customers who were able to sing the jingle, they could get a free BigMac. Although the jingle was not an ordinary song, it was the most requested song by the radio audiences. Needless to say, the campaign was successful. Dean Barrett, McDonalds senior vice president of global marketing, said The campaign was the expression of McDonalds in its own time, in terms of the fun attitude. Through this integrated advertising, McDonalds could imprint their brand image to the customers. The brand image was that they concerns about communication with the customers and the happiness of the customers. Also, they are the brand which offers fun and entertainment experience. Since 2003, McDonalds are concentrated on creating youthful images under the global marketing strategy which is the slogan Im lovin it. Hence, they have presented several marketing campaigns that reminds of youthful images by associating with Hip-Hop music, Sports and Musicians. The campaign is named Coinoffers. The coin offers a range of products that can be purchased for. However, there was a problem that many voucher and price-saving sites offer some discounting or similar service as coin-offer. Therefore, the company decided to make its own digital currency. This digital currency need to be earned by customers participation. Also, there should be branding device that represents McDonalds. Brief explanation of the campaign The coins were traditional QR codes transformed into pixel codes of a range of products such as hamburgers, fries and so on. McDonalds have distributed one million coins over the country through a wide range of media television, radio, out-door posters, digital screen of buses and trains, facebook ads, games. There are some other unconventional media choices. For example, the paper shit on the tray which has got the code on it. People have to fold the paper to get it. To collect all those coins, consumers needed to download mobile application which can scan those pixel codes as the coins. Also, the mobile app has got sound detecting function which detaches the sound from the radio and converts the sound as a coin. This mobile application was built as the central element in this campaign that is placed in the middle of circulation of earning, paying and owning. Consumers collected the coins with the application whenever they came across the codes. Once they have collected some amount of coins, they can drop by the restaurant and get the products. It is possible because each digital code have got value of one virtual coin. Result The result was fruitful. This campaign reminds people that McDonalds have always been providing fun food at a low cost. As soon as the application had been released, it became the fastest downloaded application in Denmark which has reached number 1 on iTunes app store and Android market within a day. The one million coins were collected in just 26 days that means McDonalds had to put an end to the campaign unexpectedly 2 weeks earlier that they have planned. Conclusion There are two facts that can be inferred about creating integrated campaign. This will be illustrated below. The first one is simple idea is the best in this type of advertising strategy. In this campaign, it shows that how the simple idea can be expanded broadly with various media channels. If it was a story-based idea, it must be difficult to apply that idea on print advertising. In other words, complicated idea have possibility of losing its media choice such as poster an billboard. The second one is entertaining elements can draw peoples attention. This campaign would not be successful without participation of the customers. Therefore, entertaining requisite have played key role to arouse peoples engagement. For example, the idea itself which give money to people, games. It is originally called coin hunting but it is also an up-to-date version of playing hide-and-seek for the customers. To sum up, two conditions needed to be satisfied for the success of creating integrated advertising. Firstly, big idea should come from simple thought in order to broaden media choice. Therefore, it can affect wide range of target audiences. Secondly, interesting activity should be given owing to catching peoples eyes. Regardless of advertising strategy, the intention of advertising itself is making the brand noticeable. Thus, the more people join the campaign the larger the brand become.

Color blind by the Counting Crows Essays -- song analysis

I am colorblind Coffee black and egg white Pull me out from inside I am ready (repeat 3 times) I am taffy stuck and tongue tied Stutter shook and uptight Pull me out from inside I am ready (repeat 3 times) I am fine I am covered in skin No one gets to come in Pull me out from inside I am folded and unfolded and unfolding I am colorblind Coffee black and egg white Pull me out from inside I am ready (repeat 3 times) I am fine (repeat 3 times) The song â€Å"Colorblind† by The Counting Crows nothing less than perfect for the scene it was chosen for in the film â€Å"Cruel Intentions†. It was played was one of the film’s main characters lost her virginity to another character. Though it was a beautiful fit for the scene which it played upon I don’t believe the meaning behind the song is the newness of being deflowered. The lyrics and the instrumentals accompanying them are both extremely simple in contrast to the actual meaning behind the song. To be quite succinct, the song itself is relatively simple but it is the meaning and the effort put forth in each and every line that makes it so deep. In the first line, "I am colorblind† (1), this is a clear depiction the songwriter’s (Adam Duritz) perception of everything. His emotions have been dulled due to pains of the past cnsequently renderring him cold and unfeeling. He sees everything as it is; there is simply no middle ground or grey area when it comes to life. This can be seen in the next line, â€Å"Coffee black and egg white" (2) He sees everything just as it is presented, not for what it could be if viewed differently with an open mind and open heart. â€Å"Coffee black† is a representation of how he merely sees the black of the coffee, as opposed to perceiving the richness, aroma, or other detectable qualities. The next two lines, "Pull me out from inside. / I am ready, I am ready, I am ready" (3-4) signifies the fact he is in a shell with a wall of defense up. He does not want to let his guard down, leaving him vulnerable to the pain that only a loved one can bring. In the next line when he says he is ready for love three times, this is an indication of the fact that he is ready to succumb to the power and the feeling of love. He indeed is apprehensive about the situation and is having... ...es metaphorical use to promote the ambiguity of his subject matter. Imagery is also present within the context of the song. The imagery portrayed in this song because it allows the listener visualize this scenario and his emotions. Phrases like â€Å"coffee black and egg white† which is repeated twice in the song, enables the listener to envision the message he’s trying to convey. Refrain is one of the characteristic components of many lyrical compositions, whether poetry or song. The refrain identified in this song is when the writer repeated the phrase â€Å"I am ready† three times; this is the key phrase that most accurately expresses the writer’s mentality, thus dictating the tone of the song. The repetition only serves to the purpose of reinforcing the message. The song, once again, is quite simple but it is this simplicity that makes the song as powerful as it is. It was very well written and every musical instrument that accompanied the song was epic. This piece of work is truly a masterpiece.
